Labour is to be the first novel published by JT LeRoy since it was revealed that it was the pen-name of Laura Albert. It is also another collaboration with illustrator Cherry Hood who also illustrated Harold's End. The publication has been controversial as it remains undertermined whether there is still an audience for work under the name JT LeRoy.
The novel was originally to be published in April 2006 but the publication date has been pushed ahead every month since. Pre-orders are still being taken for the novel which is currently scheduled for August 9, 2008. The publishers, Last Gasp claim that they will commit to publishing the novel, yet it is not advertised on their official website. LeRoy's San Francisco publisher, Ron Turner of Last Gasp stated, "There's no change in our plans," who will bring out LeRoy's next novel this spring. This was stated early 2006. The novel or any mention of it is also absent from the official website of JT LeRoy.
A young boy lives with his mother and her good-for-nothing boyfriend in a small trailer. When a new baby comes along, he must take care of it the best he can, drawing inspiration from a book about the labours of Hercules.
